How nurses transform domiciliary and complex care
In honour of International Nurses Day, we are taking some time to reflect on the incredible nursing professionals making a difference across Cera and home care as a whole.
When we think of healthcare, we often picture the busy wards of a hospital. But today, some of the most vital clinical work is happening where patients feel safest…at home!
In the world of home based support Domiciliary Care and Complex Care are probably the most well known. Whilst both aim to keep individuals independent, the involvement of nursing professionals is a key ingredient that keeps service users where they want to be, for as long as possible.
Here’s a look at the incredible difference nurses make across these two vital sectors.

Domiciliary Care
Standard domiciliary (home) care usually involves helping people with daily living. This could be anything from getting dressed and personal care, to medication reminders and meal preparation. So, where do the nurses fit into this?
In a modern home care setting, nurses provide valuable support alongside carers.
- Oversight: Whilst a dedicated carer may visit daily, a nurse provides the clinical governance. They ensure that care plans aren’t just about "to-do lists" but are grounded in medical safety.
- Predictive Care: Using advanced technology, like the systems we use at Cera, nurses can analyse data logged by carers to spot a decline in health before it becomes an emergency. This combination of AI and expertise is vital to predict issues early and protect our service users.
- Training the Frontline: Nurses at Cera provide their knowledge to develop key training which will help care assistants to recognise the early signs of infection or skin breakdown, effectively turning every home visit into a proactive health check.

Complex Care
Complex care (often called "Nurse-led Care") is a different world entirely. This is for individuals with profound needs. This could be anything from spinal injuries, to neurological conditions like MS, or those requiring PEG feeding and ventilators.
In this service nurses are particularly important for training and ensuring good quality care provision, in line with the complex health needs of a service user and their family.
- Specialist Interventions: Complex care requires tasks that go beyond the scope of a standard carer. Registered nurses manage tracheostomies, complex continence care, and respiratory support.
- Rapid Mobilisation: As highlighted by services like our provision, Cera Elevate, the difference a nurse makes starts on day one. Every care package begins with a Nurse-led Clinical Assessment. They don't just look at what a client needs today, but also build a risk framework for what might happen tomorrow.
- Multidisciplinary Leadership: Nurses act as the "hub" between the service user, their family, GPs, and social workers. They translate complex medical jargon into a compassionate daily routine that families can understand.
Tech-Enabled Nursing
One of the biggest shifts in home care is the combination of nursing expertise and digital innovation. Cera's smart, digital technology leverages data and machine learning to empower those delivering care, while improving outcomes for those receiving it.
By using AI-powered tools, nurses can identify "at-risk" alerts. If a carer logs a change in a client's mood or physical state, a nurse can intervene immediately. This doesn't just improve quality of life, but also keeps people out of hospitals and reduces the burden on the NHS.
Why we love Nurses at Cera
The difference a nurse makes in home care is the difference between existing at home and thriving at home.
In Domiciliary Care, they provide the safety net of professional expertise. In Complex Care, they provide the clinical skill that allows even the most medically fragile individuals to live with dignity and joy.
Whether it’s managing a ventilator or ensuring a personalised care plan is followed to the letter, nurses are the heartbeat of home based healthcare. We are so proud to have so many incredible nurses sharing their knowledge and expertise across Cera and into the homes of the people we support. We couldn’t deliver the service we do without you!
