From BT to Cera: A New Path Unfolds
Maureen left BT at 62, taking a brief break before a Christmas stint at QVC. The idea of becoming a carer was initially met with skepticism. "At first I thought, no, I can’t do that," she recalls. However, with encouragement, she decided to "try it." This leap of faith led her to a care company in Widnes, where she spent four years, before moving to Cera for a more local route.
"Best Job I've Ever Done": The Rewards of Care
Maureen's initial doubts quickly transformed into a profound sense of purpose. "And it’s one of the best jobs I’ve ever done," she exclaims. "I get a lot out of it, knowing the people on my round are being looked after. I did it because I wanted to make a difference and to help people in my local community."
Her previous role at BT, working on age and disability campaigns, provided a useful foundation for her care career. "I enjoyed helping people in this role and it did kind of lead into working in care, looking after elderly people, helping them with their bills and providing them with aids like big-button phones" she explains.
Life Experience: An Invaluable Asset
Maureen would encourage older individuals considering a career in care. "I would recommend being a carer later in life. When you’re older you bring something to the role that perhaps younger people just don’t have the life experience of. You can cook, you know how to prepare meals for people and just practical stuff like that."
Her wisdom and practical know-how are now shared with others as a care mentor at Cera, where she helps new carers find their feet in their first role at Cera.
Flexibility and Fulfilment with Cera
Maureen also highlights the flexibility offered by Cera, allowing her to tailor her work to her preferences. "I prefer to do teas and beds, so I don’t start work 'til 3pm and I finish at 11pm. I prefer it to working the mornings, people are more relaxed and you’re leaving them tucked up in bed, warm and comfortable for the night."
Maureen is just one of many people finding a rewarding part-time role as a care assistant later in life. Her story demonstrates that life experience, coupled with a compassionate heart, can lead to a truly meaningful and impactful career as a care assistant.
