Careers in Care - Linda's apprenticeship story
What did you learn on your apprenticeship?
There were lots of different topics, we covered things like safeguarding and health and safety. There were things that I knew about already, but the apprenticeship gave me a better understanding of how to support individuals and the qualification demonstrates my skills and knowledge of care.
The apprenticeship was all online learning, which was OK, it was useful to fit around shifts. And my colleagues were really helpful. I did an End Point Assessment which included a professional discussion and a test of your knowledge and problem solving skills, which I passed first time!
How has it helped you in your role/career?
Apart from the job opportunities and career progression I think it’s enhanced my skills. I’m proud of myself that I feel I have the skills to work with clients who may be more challenging. For example, where communication is difficult, I know to explain what’s going to happen. I’ve developed my professional care skills and that’s helped me adapt my approach to different clients - and colleagues too.
What are the benefits of doing an apprenticeship?
I think the apprenticeship gives me more knowledge to help new staff when they're starting their job. It's giving me a deeper understanding of the subject and a better understanding when following policies and procedures. Because I was learning whilst working I was able to put things straight into practice.
Would you recommend it to others?
I would recommend the apprenticeship route as a stepping stone to progressing in your career. When you finish your diploma in some organisations you'll become a more senior carer or be eligible for a more senior role. I'll be ready to take the next step. It certainly makes you more employable and opens up different roles and opportunities. And I didn’t pay anything for the training.
I would recommend this qualification to people who want to work in the care industry. I’d recommend it to everyone - from new carers to people who have worked a long time in care.
You can go higher if you understand all these things better, and it’s very rewarding.
What are the most important skills you've gained from studying for the apprenticeship?
- Improved communications skills
- Problem solving
- Adapting to challenging situations
I feel more equipped to do the role and confident in my abilities.
What's next for you in your career?
I want to progress and eventually I would like to go into social work. Maybe progress to Care Coordinator and go higher? I want to do something more.
