Careers in care - from feeling stuck to finding purpose
As a young person leaving school or figuring out your next steps, it can all feel very overwhelming. When you're also quietly battling anxiety and mental health struggles, finding the right path can feel almost impossible.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, unsure of your future, or worried that your anxiety might hold you back from a meaningful career, you’re not alone. In fact, you might just find your calling exactly where Carly found hers.
At just 18 years old, Carly’s life took an unexpected turn when she decided to take a chance on a job as a professional carer.
It’s completely normal to feel nervous about trying something new. After leaving school at 16, Carly was unsure what to do next and how to move forward.
I didn’t know what I wanted to do –
I just felt stuck.
With her mum already working in the sector, Carly had already had a glimpse into the world of care. Even so, stepping into it herself felt like a massive leap of faith. To cope with the nerves, she made a little deal with herself: just try it for four weeks.
"I told myself to do one month – if I couldn’t do it, I'd stop. But after four weeks, there was no way I was going anywhere."
Sometimes, all it takes is 30 days to realize you’re exactly where you are meant to be!

How can becoming a carer help you grow?
It’s more than just a career, becoming a carer can help you grow in so many ways. Whilst you are supporting others, the role and our teams are supporting you too. As Carly settled into her daily routine, the anxiety that used to feel so heavy began to lift.
My family, friends and even the people I care for say
they've seen me grow into myself.
Finding Joy
Every morning brings a fresh opportunity to bring a smile to someone's face. For Carly, the simple act of helping people start their day comfortably became a source of pride. The bond between a carer and the people they support is a two-way street of gratitude.
"When I visit service users, they always thank me, but I tell them it goes both ways – I want to thank them for giving me confidence and a job I love. When I see service users are happy and laughing, that makes me happy too."
Learning Skills
A career in care isn’t just about checking boxes and completing set tasks. It is about human connection and compassion. For anyone who struggles with social anxiety, the thought of meeting new people can be daunting. But in this role, those interactions quickly transform into life-changing confidence.
It's helped me learn how to look after myself and
taught me things everyone should learn while they’re young.
Gain Confidence
The communication, empathy, and resilience you build as a carer don't stop when your shift ends. Carly found that her new-found confidence spilled over into her personal life, making her more outgoing and eager to help others in her community.
Every day I'm building my knowledge and learning something new, this job has opened my eyes to
so many opportunities.
Discover Community
It’s important to be honest: caregiving can have its challenging moments. But when you join a team like Cera, you are never flying solo. There is a whole community of support backing you up, ensuring you always have a safe space to ask questions or chat through a tough day.
It is hard sometimes, but there's always someone at the end of the phone to talk to.
Knowing she has that safety net has allowed Carly to dream bigger than ever before. She is currently aiming to learn how to drive - a milestone she once thought her anxiety would block her from achieving—and is looking forward to progressing into specialized areas like medication management and care planning.
Looking back, taking that leap of faith was the spark that changed everything.
Starting my career in care has been a saviour for me. I can see how much I've grown – it's the
best thing I've ever done.
Could this be your perfect next step?
If you are looking for a job that gives you a reason to get out of bed, teaches you invaluable life skills, and surrounds you with a supportive community, caregiving might just be the breath of fresh air you need. You don't need a background in healthcare - just a big heart and the willingness to try.
Why not give yourself a month, just like Carly did? You might be amazed by who you become.
