We're looking for an experienced Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) to join our clinical team as a Clinical Lead Mental Health Nurse, providing specialist clinical leadership and oversight to people with complex mental health and psychological needs across community settings and specialised living establishments.
This is a senior clinical role for an RMN who understands the complexity of mental health care and is confident in supporting people across the pathway — with a strong understanding of both inpatient mental health services and community-based care.
You'll have clinical accountability for a caseload of complex mental health service users, ensuring they receive safe, evidence-based and recovery-focused care. You'll also play a key role in supporting and developing the carers and nurses delivering day-to-day care.
About the role
You'll work closely with service users, families, carers and a wide range of professionals to assess needs, manage risk and develop detailed, individualised mental health and crisis plans.
Your clinical expertise will be particularly important when supporting people experiencing complex presentations, deterioration in mental state or periods of crisis.
You will:
Provide specialist clinical leadership for complex mental health service users in the community and specialised living settings across Manchester and Cheshire with remote service nationally
Conduct regular mental health assessments, risk assessments, psychological reviews and face-to-face home visits
Develop, implement and regularly review holistic mental health care and crisis plans
Assess and manage complex risks, including self-harm, suicide, substance misuse, safeguarding, self-neglect and mental capacity
Provide specialist advice and support to carers, nurses and operational teams working with complex clients
Support staff to understand and respond effectively to complex mental health presentations
Provide clinical supervision and training, including de-escalation, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention and understanding complex mental illness
Support evidence-based, recovery-focused and trauma-informed approaches to care
Work collaboratively with GPs, psychiatrists, social workers, community mental health teams and other MDT professionals
Respond appropriately to changes in mental state, escalating clinical concerns and risks in line with policy
Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, safeguarding and regulatory requirements
Support the development of complex mental health care packages and pathways
Contribute to the recruitment, development and retention of staff with the appropriate mental health skills
Participate in a national out-of-hours/on-call advice rota
Work alongside the Head of Clinical Services and Service Director on wider mental health projects and service development
What we're looking for
This is a specialist role and significant mental health experience is essential.
You must have:
Active NMC registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
Minimum Diploma in Nursing
At least two years' post-qualification experience in mental health settings
Proven experience across inpatient and community mental health environments — for example, inpatient units, crisis teams, community mental health teams or complex needs services
Strong experience working with people with complex and enduring mental health needs
Excellent communication skills and advanced therapeutic skills
Proven leadership and management experience, including clinical supervision or team leadership
The ability to confidently assess, prioritise and manage complex mental health risks
Strong multidisciplinary working skills and the ability to build effective professional relationships
A flexible approach to working hours, including participation in an out-of-hours advice service with some flex to work remotely
A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle
Recent experience within a community mental health setting is particularly valuable, as this role involves regular face-to-face visits and clinical oversight within people's homes and specialised living environments.
Desirable experience
It would be advantageous if you have:
Teaching and assessing experience or qualifications
Training in areas such as suicide prevention or mental health first aid
Postgraduate training in areas such as CBT, PBS, NAPPI, brief solution-focused therapy or complex trauma
Experience supporting people with dual diagnoses, including mental health alongside physical health needs or substance misuse
Experience delivering clinical training and supervision
Good IT skills
